Earth Overshoot Day 2021

Jour du dépassement 2021

This year, the sad day of the global overshoot falls (already) on July 29. From this date, humanity will have spent all the resources that the Earth can regenerate in one year. We will therefore live more than 5 months « on credit » with respect to the resources of our planet.

Act and donate

What is Earth Overshoot Day?

Increasingly widespread and publicized in the media, Earth Overshoot Day is an indicator of the consumption of the planet’s resources calculated each year by the Global Footprint Network. Using more than 3,000,000 statistical data, the NGO determines the date from which all of humanity will have consumed more than what the Earth can produce in one year.

In other words, from this day forward, we will have destroyed more forests, caught more fish, hunted more wild animals and used more land than nature can regenerate in a year. This Earth Overshoot Day also marks the moment when the forests and oceans are no longer able to absorb our greenhouse gas emissions. From July 29, 2021, we are therefore living beyond our ecological means and it would take at least 1.7 Earths to support us without damaging the natural resources of our planet.

With the exception of a slight jump in 2020, following the global confinement and the blocking of many industries due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the date of the day of the overshoot only moves forward every year. For example, it was set for September 30 in 1998 and July 31 two years ago.

What to do to postpone this overshoot day?

If we don’t act quickly, that date could move inexorably forward. The first impetus must come from States, regulators, communities and companies to modify the functioning of our current system. The various recovery plans following the health crisis could be an opportunity to initiate a real ecological transition. On a personal level, each of your consumer decisions is just as important. If we take the example of the preservation of forests, you will find their imprint everywhere in your purchases of food, fuel or even clothes.

To take more concrete action, Planète Urgence has launched the 1€ donated = 1 tree planted operation, which allows you to support our daily fight for the preservation of the environment through forest preservation projects. In 2020, 1,781,180 trees were planted. Help us do better in 2021 and try to roll back Earth Overshoot Day together.

As a reminder, each private donation made for Planète Urgence is tax-exempt up to 66%, within the limit of 20% of your taxable income. Thus, if you set up a regular donation of €30 per month, you plant a tree per day and your donation only costs you €10.20 per month after tax deduction.
