Planète Education, a new project to raise children’s awareness of the environment
On the occasion of this new school year, Planète Urgence is inaugurating a new project to raise children’s awareness of the environment: Planète Éducation. At the heart of an increasingly difficult ecological and climatic context, future generations are the most involved and must have the tools to understand and become actors in the world of tomorrow.
A relevant project in a particular local context
According to the study on the state of the climate in Africa in 2019, the temperature is increasing by 0.4° per decade in Africa, twice as much as global warming. At the same time, the loss of biodiversity is extremely significant on this continent, which is facing increased demographic pressure. Raising awareness of environmental protection is a necessity on the African continent in order to preserve ecosystems and adapt communities to climate change.
Goal 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals includes within it a specific component relating to the creation of an Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) promoting citizenship and the preservation of the planet.
Planet Education aims to develop the learning of children in Benin, then in Cameroon and Madagascar, concerning the preservation of the environment. Pour ce faire, Planète Urgence équipera les écoles primaires d’outils pédagogiques et formera les acteurs éducatifs pour leur permettre d’agir localement et de répandre les meilleures pratiques au niveau national.
Actions planned in 3 countries
In order to make each child an actor in the world of tomorrow and in the preservation of his environment, the activities of the Planète Education project are massively oriented towards the tools and the reinforcement of local actors (teachers and other members of the educational staff, trainers, students, etc).
The pilot phase was launched in 2021 in Benin, in particular with a field study on environmental issues and the coherent actions to be proposed.
From 2022, the project will be consolidated in this first country before being deployed in Cameroon and Madagascar, where the needs are also great.
