BIOMA Foundation is a non-governmental organization based in Samarinda, East Kalimantan (Borneo Island) established in 1998 (bioma.or.id). BIOMA has a vision of "Sustainability of the functions and benefits of natural resources and environment for the sustainability of all creatures including human well being, especially local communities". To achieve this vision, BIOMA has a mission of "to promote the community’s awareness and participation and to support policies and efforts in the protection and sustainable use of natural resources and the environment as a gift of God Almighty". BIOMA founded by a group of young environmental activists in Samarinda (mostly graduated from the Faculty of Forestry, Mulawarman University) who concerned about the damages of the environment, especially forest resources in Kalimantan Island. Institutionally and personally, BIOMA has had adequate relevant experiences in the project implementation, community facilitation and assistance. In the beginning of its establishment, BIOMA worked more on research in field of natural resources, but later they work with community in managing natural resources sustainably. Today BIOMA works with community in several villages in Kutai Kartanegara District and Malinau District, East Kalimantan Province.

The closest airport to the mission site is Sepinggan Airport, Balikpapan City (BPN). Balikpapan is a 2-hour flight from Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. Sepinggan Airport is an international airport, and one of the biggest airports in Eastern part of Indonesia When the volunteer arrives in Balikpapan in the morning, he/she can proceed to Samarinda City by shuttle bus. If the volunteer arrives in the afternoon, he/she will stay overnight in Balikpapan. A room will be booked at Hakaya hotel (located near the Airport). BIOMA/PU Indonesia will arrange the hotel and the airport transfer. The next day, the volunteer will proceed to Samarinda, 3 hours by shuttle bus. We will send information clearly how to go to Samarinda by shuttle bus. PU staff and BIOMA staff will pick up the volunteer in Samarinda Shuttle Bus Station. After arrive in Samarinda, the volunteer will meet Planète Urgence Indonesia and BIOMA for briefing session. Then BIOMA will host and organize the volunteer mission, including how to go to and where to stay.

Transit in Balikpapan City will be in Hakaya Plaza Hotel (www.hakayaplazahotel.com) In Samarinda, the volunteer will stay in a guest house close to the mission site (BIOMA office). It is a private standard room with clean condition. Meal during the mission will be organized by BIOMA. The staple food of Indonesian is rice with the dishes of chicken, fish, and sometimes beef. Most Indonesian also likes to eat vegetable. Indonesian used a lot of spices for cooking. For the volunteer, the host will provide less spicy food. Simple European food can be also found in some restaurant in Samarinda. The transportation from the guesthouse to the mission site will be organized by BIOMA, by using motorcycle with helmet. A staff or trusted person will be assigned to pick up and send off. The volunteer is not allowed to drive by him/herself. BIOMA will prioritize the safety of the transportation. The mission will be conducted in BIOMA office in Samarinda. The meeting or training will take place in an informal meeting room. The material available for the training/mission: whiteboard and board marker, electricity, internet connection (by using Wi-Fi in the office, and SIM Card outside the office), LCD projector.
