RACINE Project – Cameroon<\/h3>\n

Currently being rolled out<\/p>\n

Led by Plan\u00e8te Urgence, the RACINE project (Renforcer les Acteurs Communautaires Investis pour la Nature et l\u2019Environnement) – Strengthening Community Actors Committed to Nature and the Environment – <\/em>builds the capacities of civil society stakeholders in Cameroon. Through training and technical support, RACINE aims to empower these organisations and help them achieve a lasting, locally driven impact on environmental protection and restoration.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Context<\/h2><\/div><\/div>\n

Cameroon lost more than one million hectares of tree cover between 2013 and 2021 due to agriculture, the timber trade and other human activities (Global Forest Watch, 2022). Nevertheless, the country remains a key player in global forest restoration efforts. In response to these challenges, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) play an essential role in facilitating dialogue between local communities and policymakers, thereby influencing public policies in favour of sustainable development. However, local CSOs face organisational and funding challenges, as donors often favour international NGOs from the Global North due to historical legacies and demanding administrative requirements (OECD, 2018).<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

This lack of support limits their impact on environmental protection and community resilience. The RACINE project aims to strengthen the capacities of local CSOs by following three key principles: non-competition, co-construction and long-term sustainability. This capacity building enables communities to better understand and anticipate the effects of climate change, adopt resilient agricultural practices, diversify their sources of income and improve their access to adaptation funding. By strengthening local dynamics, the RACINE project contributes to empowering communities and preserving ecosystems, helping to secure a more sustainable future for generations to come.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

\u201cThe RACINE project offers a genuine model for a development process based on synergies between stakeholders who are firmly committed to protecting the global environment in a context of ongoing challenges. Its structure is innovative because the stakeholders themselves are at the heart of their own development, through the assessment and prioritisation of their identified needs. Putting their skills into practice through sub-granting will enable each CSO to assess its own capabilities. This is an innovative approach compared with previous capacity-building practices in Cameroon. With the support of current and future donors, the project\u2019s various phases will enable it to achieve an even greater impact.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n
