The new data published by the World Resources Institute<\/a> (WRI)\u00a0and\u00a0Global Forest Watch<\/a> (GFW), in partnership with the University of Maryland, show a slowdown in the destruction of tropical primary forests in 2025<\/strong>. After a year marked by extreme wildfires and record levels of forest loss in 2024, the 2025 figures point to a relative improvement.<\/p>\n

However, behind this decline lies a more complex reality<\/strong>: global deforestation remains at very high levels, largely incompatible with the international commitment to \u201chalt and reverse forest loss by 2030\u201d made at the COP26<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Tropical forests continue to disappear due to the combined effects of agricultural expansion<\/strong>, mining activities<\/strong>, wildfires<\/strong> and climate change<\/strong>. While some public policies demonstrate that it is possible to slow the destruction of forest ecosystems, progress remains fragile.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A decline in tropical deforestation in 2025\u2026 but not yet a turning point<\/h2><\/div><\/div>\n

In 2025, the planet lost nearly 4.3 million hectares of tropical primary forests<\/strong><\/span>. This is equivalent to the size of Denmark, or more than eleven football fields destroyed every minute<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

This figure represents a 36% decrease compared to 2024<\/span><\/strong>, a year marked by exceptional wildfires in several regions of the world.<\/p>\n

However, this improvement must be put into strong perspective: forest loss remains 46% higher than it was ten years ago<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

According to Global Forest Watch, current deforestation levels are still around 70% above the trajectory needed to meet the commitments made at the COP26<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span> to halt and reverse deforestation by 2030.<\/p>\n

This situation is particularly concerning, as tropical primary forests play an irreplaceable role in the global climate balance.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n
