Project Plan\u00e8te Education – Benin<\/h3>\n

On deployment<\/p>\n

According to the State of the Climate in Africa 2019 study, temperatures are rising by 0.4\u00b0 per decade, twice as much as global warming. At the same time, the loss of biodiversity is extremely significant on this continent, which has to cope with increased demographic pressure. In the countries where Plan\u00e8te Urgence operates, environmental education is almost absent from official school curricula in public primary schools, where young people need to learn about environmental management in order to share it more effectively in society.<\/p>\n

The project is a response to a dual challenge:
\n– The growing environmental and climatic tensions in Benin, many of which are man-made: the disappearance of forests (15% between 2005 and 2015), the constant increase in plastic packaging discarded in nature (72,000 tonnes discarded every year) etc.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

– Lack of material and training for teachers to pass on the concepts of environmental education and sustainable development (no document on ESD since 2000, 50% of primary school teachers think they have less than 5\/10 competence in ESD).<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

This first phase of the Plan\u00e8te \u00c9ducation project hopes to help raise awareness of environmental protection and build the capacity of pupils in Benin’s public primary schools to adapt to climate change. To achieve this, the emphasis is on consolidating teachers’ skills and incorporating PU’s educational content into school curricula to ensure that the action is sustainable.<\/p>\n
