The Amazon is the setting for many fantasies. From its name, inspired by the Amazon women of mythology, to the incredible richness of its biodiversity and the forest peoples who live there, the Amazon is a unique ecosystem. A vast region located in South America and crossed by the Amazon River, the Amazon spans eight countries and one overseas territory: Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia, Suriname, Guyana and French Guiana. <\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Deforestation in the Amazon is now threatening this green lung of the planet and invaluable reservoir of biodiversity. Threats: massive and ongoing deforestation<\/h2><\/div><\/div>\n

Over the past fifty years, deforestation in the Amazon has accelerated due to several factors. In ten years, the area of forest lost in the Amazon is equivalent to that of mainland France, i.e. 415,000 to 587,000 km\u00b2.<\/p>\n

The main causes are well known and interconnected:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • conversion of forests into pastureland for cattle farming;<\/li>\n
  • expansion of industrial crops (soya, maize, palm oil);<\/li>\n
  • mining and road infrastructure;<\/li>\n
  • forest fires, often started to clear land.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

    The National Strategy to Combat Imported Deforestation (SNDI) points out that the European Union remains responsible for more than a third of global deforestation linked to international trade, through its imports of soy, beef, palm oil and cocoa.<\/p>\n

    If the current rate continues, the World Bank estimates that by 2050, nearly 40% of the Amazon rainforest could be lost. Such deforestation would disrupt the water cycle in South America and directly threaten the survival of millions of people.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

    The marvellous hummingbird<\/h3>\n

    Also known as the spatulate-tailed hummingbird, it is endemic to the jungles of northern Peru and can be recognised by the large purplish discs that the males use to scare off predators or impress the females.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    The jaguar<\/h3>\n

    Its habitat varies between 30 and 250km2. Only 250 individuals remain in a country like Ecuador, making it a critically endangered species.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    The chorongo monkey<\/h3>\n

    This is one of the largest monkeys in South America. It does not reach adulthood until it is 7-8 years old and only gives birth to a young every 2 years.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n
