Celebrating International Mangrove Day 2022, Let’s Get to Know Mangrove with The Teachers in Muara Badak
July 26 is declared by UNESCO as the International Day for The Conservation of The Mangrove Ecosystems.
Planete Urgence and the Mangrove Lestari Foundation (YML) held training and workshops on Mangrove Ecosystem Conservation. This activity is supported by the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) for Education Services in Muara Badak District. So that as many as 27 teachers from Elementary School (SD) and Junior High School (SMP) in Muara Badak District, Kutai Kartanegara, participated in this activity which was held on Thursday (28/7/2022).
The training and workshops are filled with materials on General knowledge of Mangrove Ecosystem, Mangrove Planting Methods and Techniques, to Learning Methods and Media for Mangrove Ecosystem Conservation.
“Because even though they are close to the location of the mangrove ecosystem, their knowledge and understanding of the mangrove ecosystem is still limited, and we hope that with this activity, all teachers in Muara Badak District can become agents of reforestation, and can contribute to increasing environmental awareness for their students at school.” said Mulyono Sardjono, E&D Program Manager of Planete Urgence.
Meanwhile, Arwan, one of the teachers of the State Elementary School (SDN) 017 Muara Badak who participated in this activity, felt grateful for having gained new knowledge and insights : “We are very grateful for this training, especially from PU and YML who have shared their knowledge about the mangrove ecosystem, how to plant and maintain the mangrove trees. Hopefully we can apply the knowledge we have received today with the students immediately”.
Furthermore, Yayasan Mangrove Lestari with the support of Planete Urgence will also make visits to several schools to campaign the importance of the mangrove ecosystem to the students. This activity is planned to start in the first week of August 2022.
Similar activities will also be carried out in Muara Adang District, Paser Regency at the end of August 2022, within the scope of the New Mahakam Project.
“So this is a collaborative project for reforestation of the East Kalimantan mangrove ecosystem between PU, YML and Pokja Pesisir Balikpapan,” explained Mulyono. “But later, it will not only be mangrove planting activities, this project will also include economic development activities for local communities and environmental awareness raising,” he said.
